Ji Min Hong’s We are family (2023) captures a heartwarming moment of kinship and connection within the vibrant world of 'Wonder Land.' Gathered under a brilliant rainbow, the beloved characters Shine, Lue, and Mel are joined by a new friend, Lionie—a visitor from the mysterious 'Wonder Space.' The scene pulses with the joyful energy of a picnic, where the boundaries between friendship and family dissolve into a shared atmosphere of pure happiness. In this work, Lionie serves as a narrative bridge, having invited the group to explore the infinite possibilities of Wonder Space. The large-scale circular linen canvas, measuring 100 cm in diameter, creates an immersive portal that draws the viewer into this intimate circle of companionship. Through soft acrylic layers and a rhythmical use of color, Hong emphasizes that 'family' is not defined by origin but by the warmth and support found within our chosen communities, marking a significant expansion of the artist’s enchanting universe.
